Pet health retailers have just recently started getting more affordable sources of antlers to sell to the consumer. They are still really expensive though! Here are some of the benefits if you are willing to spring the cash (and I think you should)...
1) they last a long time and will outlast rawhides, bully sticks and even marrow bones.
2) they are extremely rich in minerals. Velvet antler is a freeze-dried processed antler that is used in tonics for humans. It has been known to have amazing healing effects.
3) they have calcium and would be a nice contribution to a bone meal supplement
4) they have zinc and would be a nice contribution to a skin & coat supplement
5) they are an excellent joint care supplement and rich in Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), which we are most familiar with in the form of Glucosamine and Chondroitin.
6) they do not crack and splinter like bones and are therefore a lot safer, especially for a puppy (although you need to always attend puppies when they play with consumables)
7) they do not smell and if you are tired of the "ass" stink of bully sticks, then there is a great option with antlers
8) they are all natural and 100% of what they are said to be.
The antler as a chew for dogs is excellent and can benefit the growth of a puppy as much as relieve pain in an older or senior dog. I like that they last but also that my dog loves them and chooses them over almost anything at any time. Be ready to pay a little bit extra though because they really are more expensive than the alternatives for dog chews.
